今年4月に突然の「無期限活動休止」を宣言しファンに大きな衝撃を与えたfade。2月に待望のメジャーアルバムをリリースし、世界に向けての活躍が期待されていただけに、ファンには大きなショックだったことだろう。
 
BEEASTが彼らと初めてコンタクトしたのは、2012年に行われた『天～TEN～ LIVE TOUR 2012』での取材のことだった。筆者が彼らの作品『天～TEN～』のサウンドに触れたときの衝撃は、今でも忘れられない。アルバム一曲目に収められていた「In the end」を耳にしたとき「これが日本のバンドなのか!?」と、耳を疑った。その荒々しさとメロディセンス、かつキャッチ―なグルーブは、従来の日本のロックバンドには見られないスケールの大きさを感じさせてくれた。
 
筆者がロックに興味を持ち始めた80年代、ロックの主体は海外にあり、日本からも世界に通用するバンドが現れることをいつも切望していた。そのころから現在まで筆者が抱いていたその思いに対して、彼らのサウンドは一つの答えを示してくれた。ボーカリストのJon Underdownはアメリカから来た西洋人であり、彼らは完全な日本人バンドではなかった。しかし彼らへの取材を重ねていくたびに、彼らは真に日本に根差した「日本のバンド」であることを感じ、そしていよいよ「世界に通用する日本のバンド」となっていくことを、筆者は信じて疑わなかった。それだけに彼らの無期限活動休止宣言は、筆者にとっても残念な出来事だった。
 
しかし彼らが既に前を向いて新たな道へ進みつつあることは、彼らが『【NEWS】fadeのメンバーがこれまでの活動とこれからを語るミニインタビュー』で語ったとおりだ。そして彼らのラストステージとなった『Crossroad Live Tour 2014 ～HISTORIA～』ツアーファイナルが2014年6月12日に渋谷WWWにて行われた。今回はその模様を、大盛りレポ二本立てでレポートする。
 
In April 2014, fade suddenly announced an “indefinite hiatus” to greatly shock their fans. This must have been a great shock to the fans because the band released a long-awaited album from a major label in February and their world-wide success was expected.
 
BEEAST contacted the band for the first time on “-TEN- LIVE TOUR 2012”. I (the author) have never forgotten the impact of the sound of their work “-TEN-”. When I listened to the first song of the album, “In the end”, I doubted my ears – “Is this really a Japanese band!?” I felt that their brutal sound, sense of melodies, and catchy groove had a vast scale that had never existed in other conventional Japanese rock bands.
 
In 1980s when I got interested in rock music, its base existed overseas and I always strongly wished that a world-class band would come from Japan as well. The sound of fade showed the answer to my longtime wish. The singer, Jon Underdown, is a western person from USA so they are not a completely Japanese band. However, every time I made contact with the band, I felt that they are a “Japanese” band truly rooted in Japan, and I had very little doubt that they would become a “world-class band from Japan”. For that reason alone, it was very disappointing for me to hear their announcement of the indefinite hiatus.
 
However, as the band talked in the previous interview, it is clear that they are already going forward a new way. Their last stage was on the final day of “Crossroad Live Tour 2014 ～HISTORIA～” at Shibuya WWW on June 12th, 2014. Here we present you the special report of the show in two parts.

スタートの定刻になると、ステージの幕の前に張られたスクリーンに、fadeの歴史をたどった秘蔵映像が映し出された。最初はまだ幼い少年の顔だった彼らが、近年に近づくにしたがって成長を遂げ、大人の表情へと変わっていったことがわかる。ここに改めてfadeの12年という歴史が示された。そして映像が終了すると、SEとともにいよいよメンバーがステージに現れた。rui、kansei、noriyuki、5°、そして最後にJon。
 
At the appointed time for the start, the screen in front of the stage curtain showed the treasured footage telling the history of fade. You could see that they looked like young boys in the beginning but as they grew up recently their expressions changed into those of grown men. This again showed the 12-year history of fade. When the footage was over, at last the band appeared on the stage with SE – rui, kansei, noriyuki, godo, and finally, Jon.


 
 
 
 

 
「忘れられない夜にしていこうぜ！」爆音が鳴り響く中、Jonの叫ぶ声が響いた。いよいよステージのスタートだ。オープニングナンバーは「Drifting Away」。アッパーなサウンドが観衆の気持ちを激しく揺り動かした。Jonは腕を振り上げ、点を指さしながら「どうした？こんなもんじゃないだろう!?」と言わんばかりに観衆をあおった。Jonのそんな仕草に、観衆は興奮していくばかり。一心不乱にありったけのパワーを演奏に込める彼ら。そのパワーを一手に集め、「忘れられない夜を作り上げる」ために、Jonがタッチダウンを決める、そんな構図がこの日のfadeのステージにはあった。
 
“Let’s make a night to remember!” – Jon shouted and his voice echoed in the loud blast of sound. The show started at last. The opening number was “Drifting Away”. The uplifting sound heavily rocked the feelings of the audiences. Jon raised his arm, pointing his finger to fuel the excitement of the audiences as if saying “What’s wrong? You could do better!” Jon’s action made the audiences excited more and more. The band put all their power into the performance. In order to gather all the power and “make a night to remember”, Jon scored a touchdown – such a scene could be seen in that night’s show of fade.

 

 
この日の礼を告げるMCを、Jonは少し低いトーンで語っていた。その声には、この日を迎えるにあたっての覚悟も感じられた。プレーが再開、Jonが「Jump!」と叫び、その合図で観衆は一斉にジャンプし始めたことで、会場の空気が大きなうねりを見せ始めた。この熱い空気の中で、時に見られたruiの笑顔が印象的だった。fadeのリーダーとして強い責任感を持ち、バンドを支えてきたruiは、ステージでも常に最後列でサウンドをクールに支えていた。しかしその瞬間だけはそんな重圧から解放され、彼らのこれまでの歩みを感じながらプレーを楽しんでいるようにも見えた。
 
Jon was talking in a little low tone to express his gratitude for the day. In his voice I could felt that he was prepared to see this day. As the band started to play again and Jon shouted “Jump!”, the audiences started to jump together and the atmosphere in the venue started to show a surge. In this hot air, rui’s smile was occasionally seen, which was impressive. rui, who had a strong sense of responsibility as the leader of fade to support the band, coolly supported the band at the back on the stage all the time. However, only at the moment he smiled, he seemed to enjoy performing while feeling the band’s past steps.

 
 
 

 
そして2012年に作り上げられたアルバム『天』より、「In the end」、「REIMEI～黎明～」、さらにシングルリリースされた「One Reason」と続いた。巨大なうねりを呼ぶビートの嵐。そんな中で改めて感じられたのが、フロントマンJonの真剣なステージング。この日、Jonはいたずらっぽい笑みを浮かべ、フロアにちょっかいを出すようなパフォーマンスをほとんどしなかった。むしろその強い思いを、真剣に歌に込めていた。その姿は、Jonが「碧い目のサムライ」と呼ばれるゆえんを改めて思い起こさせた。
 
Then, from the album created in 2012 “TEN”, the band played “In the end”, “REIMEI”, and “One Reason” which was release as a single. In the storm of beats making a tremendous surge, I realized Jon’s sincere stage performance as a frontman. That day he seldom teased the audiences on the floor with a mischievous smile. Rather he put his strong feelings into singing seriously. It reminded me of the reason that he is called “a samurai with blue eyes”.

 
 
 
 
そしてステージは一時、静けさに包まれた。Jonが語った。「『結果よりも、120％のベストを尽くす。その後はなんとかなるようになる』俺は、人生はそんなものだと考えているんだ」そんなJonの思いを表したという最新アルバムからの曲「One Shot Dealer」から、シングルリリースされた「Cross Road」そして「Moment of Life」へ。「One Shot Dealer」と「Cross Road」はベストアルバムとなった最新アルバムに収録された曲の中でも、新たに書き起こされた曲であり、真にfadeが世界に向けて発信しようとした思いの一端。「最新アルバムには思いを十分に詰め込むことはできなかった」と彼らは語っていたが、ここではこれらの楽曲をプレーすることで、その困難な状況でも打ち出した彼らの活動の成果を、強くアピールしていた。
 
At one point, the stage was wrapped in the silence. Jon said, “Doing my 120% best is more important than the result. After that things will work out- I believe that’s the way life is.” Jon’s such attitude was expressed in the song “One Shot Dealer” from their latest album. Following that, the band played “Cross Road” which was released as a single and then “Moment of Life”. Among the songs in their latest album, “One Shot Dealer” and“Cross Road” had been newly written as part of fade’s true messages to the world. Although they said “we couldn’t put enough feelings into the latest album”, by playing these songs on the stage, they strongly demonstrated the outcome of their actions achieved even in such a difficult situation.
