編集部員の入魂特集「Editor’s Note…PASSION」。今回はExtra Editonとしてライター児玉圭一のサンフランシスコでのロック巡礼をお届けしたい。
 
サンフランシスコ、午後1時。初夏の陽光に浮かぶミッション地区。有名なドローレス教会を通り過ぎてヴァレンシア・ストリートへ辿り着く。『Elbo Room』はこの近くにある筈だ。僕は日本から9000km以上も離れたこの街へ彼らに会うためにやって来た。愚かにも奇跡の来日公演を見逃してしまった不滅のロックンロールバンド、Flamin’ Grooviesの地元サンフランシスコでのライヴを観るために。今夜の前売り券は既に完売したらしい。僕は当日券を当てにしてここまでやって来た。あとは出たとこ勝負のロックンロール！果たして僕は無事に彼らに会うことが出来るのだろうか？今は自分の幸運を信じるしかない。
 
San Francisco, Mission district, 1:00 p.m. I passing though the famous Dolores church and arrived at Valencia street. Seemingly, “Elbo Room” is around here. I came in order to meet them in this city that 5900 miles from Japan. Because so foolish, I overlooked the their miraculous gig in Tokyo. Then, I came here to see home town gig of the immortal Rock and roll band called Flamin’ Groovies! Seemingly, the advance ticket was already sold out. However, I expected the entrance ticket. So leaving a matter to chance, it is Rock’n roll! I can only pray for my little luck now.
 

しばらく魅惑的な雰囲気のミッション地区をうろつくが、目指す『Elbo Room』がなかなか見つからない。警察署の近くにそのクラブはあるらしい。ふと目に付いた新聞販売スタンドのメキシコ人家族に警察署の場所を訊ねると、一家の長であるお父さんはスペイン語混じりの英語で「その道を左に曲がって2ブロック先だよ」と教えてくれた。彼は異邦人が警察署の場所を訊ねたので僕の身を案じてくれたのか「God bless you」と言って手を振った。
 
I hung around the fascinating Mission district for a while. But I was not able to arrive at “Elbo Room”. There seems to be the club near the police station. Then I asked the Mexican family of the newspaper sale stand the way to the police station. Then, their father said in Spanish “It turned to the left at the way and 2 blocks ahead” And he worrying about me, because a foreigner asked the place of the police station. he waved and said “God bless you”.
 
  

程無く『Elbo Room』へ辿り着くが、時刻は午後3時。入口は閉まっていた。ヴァレンシア・ストリートを少し歩いて、アンティークショップの前のベンチでしばし休憩。それから『Elbo Room』の入口へ戻ってみると、メガネをかけた男性と小柄な女性がやって来た。2人に「今夜、ここにFlamin’ Grooviesが来るんだよね？」と話しかけてみる。
 
「そうだよ。君、観に来たの？」
「そうです、日本から来ました」
「日本からだって！」
彼の名はEric Predoehl。ビデオ製作会社の経営者でFlamin’ Grooviesのメンバーとは旧知の仲らしく、今夜のライヴを撮影しに来たという。女性はHeidi、Ericの友人だ。3人でしばし立ち話をしていると、Bob DylanのTシャツ姿のFlamin’ Grooviesの新ドラマー、Victor M.Penalosaがやって来た。彼は僕が日本からやって来たファンだと知ると、すかさず特製のFlamin’ Groovies缶バッジを僕に手渡して「今日は暑いね、水飲みなよ」とミネラルウォーターのボトルもくれた。極めつけのナイスガイVictorはCyril JordanがFlamin’ Groovies解散後に結成したMagic Cristianのドラマーを務めている筋金入りのFlamin’ Grooviesフリークだ。
 
And I arrived at “Elbo Room” soon. The time is 3:00 p.m. The entrance closed. I walked Valencia streets and took a break for a while at the bench in front of the antique shop. And when I came back to the entrance of “Elbo Room”, a man with glasses and a little woman came over. I said to them “Is Flamin ‘Groovies playing here tonight?”
 
“Yes, it is. Do you came to see them here?”
“I came from Japan to meet them”
“Oh you came from Japan!?”
He is Eric Predoehl, the owner of the video production company. He seems to be a friend of the members of Flamin’ Groovies. And he came to shooting gig of tonight. A little woman is Heidi. She is a friend of Eric. When we talked for a while, Victor M.Penalosa of new drummer of Flamin’ Groovies who wore Bob Dylan T-shirt came over. And when he knew that I’m the fan who came over from Japan, he handed me a specially made Flamin’ Groovies badge and gave the bottle of the water “Today is hot, please drink the water, ” What a nice dude ! Victor is big fan of Flamin’ Groovies and as the drummer of Magic Christian which Cyril Jordan formed after Flamin’ Groovies break up.
 
  

彼と話していると、Ericが「君はラッキーだぞ、メンバーが来た！」と叫んだ。するとパークレーンに停まった車からChris Wilsonが現れた。フランクな雰囲気の彼に自己紹介。Ericが2人の写真を撮ってくれた。そして程無くしてEricがまた叫んだ。「Cyril Jordanが来たよ！」
 
僕の目の前で微笑んでいるCyril Jordanの装いはクールなモッズ・ファッション―水玉模様のシャツ、スリムなブラックジーンズの足元はサイドゴアのチェルシーブーツ―そして黒いGジャンの胸に輝くのはThe Byrdsのバッジ。
「それ、どこで買ったんですか？」
「The PrimsoulsのPeter Caseからもらったんだ。君、サンフランシスコは初めて？『Amoeba Music』（ヘイトアシュベリーにある広大な売場面積を誇るレコード店）には行ったかい？」
「もちろん、行きました…今夜、『Shake some action』をやりますか？『Slow death』は？」
「もちろんやるさ！」
 
And when I talked with him, Eric shouted, “You got lucky! another member came over!,” Then Chris Wilson appeared from the car. I introduced myself to him who was cheerful. Eric took the photograph of Chris and me. And soon after, Eric shouted again. “Cyril Jordan is coming!”
 
Cyril Jordan who is smiling in the face of me wore cool Mods dress. Polka dot shirt, Slim black jeans, Chelsea boots and shinny badge of The Byrds on his jacket. “Where you bought it?,” He said “Peter Case of The Primsouls gave it to me. Did you came San Francisco for the first time? Did you go down Amoeba music?,” I said “Sure!, Will you play Shake some action tonight? and Slow death?, “ “Of course, we will be play them!”
 
  

生まれた場所と世代は違えどCyrilと僕は音楽的なルーツが同じだということが分かった。THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING STONES, The Kinks, ブリティッシュ・ビート、60年代のアメリカン・ポップスとR&B…中学生の頃にレコード屋でThe ByrdsやTHE WHOのアルバムを手に取った時に感じた、あのときめきと興奮を僕らは時空を越えて共有しているに違いない。もちろん僕は後追いのロックファンに過ぎない。一方Cyrilは60年代のサンフランシスコの濃密なロックシーンをリアルタイムで体験している。Jimi HendrixやJanis Joplin、Cream時代のEric Claptonといったロックの偉人達と顔なじみで、The Byrdsのメンバーとは友達だったという凄い人なのだ。
 
それにしても、一体今日という日は何て素晴らしい日なんだ！たかがロックンロールのためにサンフランシスコまでやって来た僕にロックの神が微笑みかけてくれているような気がした。午後の陽の光が降り注ぐヴァレンシア・ストリートを行き交う人々を眺めながら「ビューティフルな日だな」とVictorが呟く。
 
 
Birth place and generation differ from him, however, I found that I had the roots of the music same as him. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, British beat, 1960’s American pops and R&B…Across the space and time, we must share that palpitation and excitement that we felt when we picked up the LP of The Byrds and The Who in a record shop at the days of the high school. Of course I’m only a follow-up Rock fan. On the other hand, Cyril really experienced a superb rock scene of San Francisco in the 60’s. He was acquaintance with Rock greats such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Eric Clapton of Cream era and also friends with members of The Byrds. So he is a great walking dictionary of Rock’n roll.
 
By the way, what a wonderful day today! I had a feeling that God of the Rock’n roll smiled at me who just came from Japan for only rock’n roll. Gently sunlight pours into Valencia street, beautiful people come and go, and Victor said ”It’s a beautiful day,” At the time of twilight, people began to gather in front of the club. I introduced myself to David Greenfield who is the promoter of the gig of tonight. He is a friendly nice guy. ”Did you came from Japan to sake only for seeing Flamin’ Groovies?, and without ticket !?”
 
 

夕暮れ時、店の前に人々が集まり始め、僕はプロモーターのDavid Greenfieldに自己紹介した。彼はフレンドリーな雰囲気のナイスガイ。「日本から来たって？わざわざFlamin’ Grooviesを観るために？え！チケット持っていないの！？」
 
店が開いたので入口の店員に「当日券はありますか？」と訊ねると「当日券はない。前売りで完売したよ」との返答。ドアはライヴ目前で閉じられた。ああ、無情。「なんてこった、ここまで来たのに観ずには帰れないよ」すると救世主Davidがやって来た。「君の名前をゲストリストに載せておいたよ。エントランスで名前を告げれば入れるよ」「ありがとう、David！」ドアは再び開かれた。まるで映画『あの頃ペニーレーンと』みたいな成り行きだ。
 
The club opened, I asked whether sell the ticket to the doorman. And he said “No, we sell only advance ticket, it’s sold out already” The doors was closed at face of me. “Les Miserables! I can’t go back for not seeing the gig!” Then savior David came over. He said “I added your name is on the guest list. You can came in” “Thank you very much David! You saved my day!” It’s like a movie called Almost Famous !
 
 

満員のライヴスペースではNashville Teensの「タバコロード」が流れている。ステージ上のDJブースで楽しそうにレコードを回しているのはDJ Sid PresleyことDavid Greenfield。物販コーナーでTシャツを買っていると、Cyrilがやって来た。「君、やったね！」「Davidのおかげです」
 
救世主Davidが次々にスピンするリズム＆ブルース、ガレージパンクに導かれて、場内は古き良き60年代の雰囲気に包まれていく。午後6時、Cyril Jordanがステージに現れ、オープニングアクト、Rue’ 66の登場を告げる。2人の60’sガールがフロントに立つ彼らのメインレパートリーはSerge Gainsbourg、France Gall、Brigitte Bardot等のフレンチ・ポップス。曲間のMCもフランス語だ。女性陣のバックを務める4人の男性メンバーは手練揃い。彼らはTHE ZOMBIESの「Leave me be」やTHE ROLLING STONESの「Paint it black」といった名曲を次々に披露。
 
Rue’ 66のライヴが終わるとDavidのDJタイムが再開。ステージではFlamin’ Grooviesの機材セッティングが始まる。VOXアンプ前に立てかけられたCyril Jordanのトレードマークのアンペグ・ギター。照明の光に映えるその透明なボディを眺めているだけでもうすぐ始まるライヴへの期待が逸る。
 
“Tobacco road” of Nashville Teens was played in full floor. In the DJ booth on the stage, DJ Sid Presley aka David Greenfield is spin the records happily. And when I buy a T-shirt at the merchandising place, Cyril came over. ”Man, you made it!” I said “David saved me” Savior David spins vintage Garage punk and R&B, he leads us to the good old 60’s feeling. This time is around 6:00 PM, Cyril Jordan appears in the stage and introduced the opening band called Rue’ 66. Their main repertory is French pop music such as Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall and Brigitte Bardot. They also played the famous tune such as “Paint it black” of The Rolling Stones, “Leave me be” of The Zombies. And when live of Rue’ 66 was over, David was resumed the Djing and setting for Flamin’ Groovies begins on the stage. An Ampeg guitar that the signature of Cyril Jordan leaned before VOX amplifier. Expectation to beginning gig becomes rash soon just to look at the transparent body shining in the spotlight.
 
  

 

午後7時過ぎ、遂にその時がやって来た。Flamin’ Grooviesの登場。たちまち巻き起こる大歓声。記念すべき本国での復活ライヴ。それを僕は間近で目撃しようとしている。
 
「良い子の皆さん、今晩は。俺たちはサンフランシスコからやって来たFlamin’ Groovies！ ハロー、サンキュー、行くぜ！」Cyrilが「Yeah my baby」のオープニング・コードをかき鳴らし、ライヴがスタート。テレキャスターを構えたChrisが吠えるように歌い、GeorgeのヘヴィーなベースラインとVictorの躍動感漲るドラミングがフロアーを揺らす。熱狂のライヴの始まりだ。
 
「Please please girl」,「You tore me down」とジャングリーなギターが大活躍するナンバーがテンポよく演奏され、「まだロックンロールを愛しているかい？」というCyrilのMCの後にFreddy Canonの名曲「Tallahasse Lassie」が激しく炸裂。縦横無尽にドライヴするビートの大波が観客に揺さぶりをかける。「Gene Clarkは好き？よし、The Byrdsの曲を演るよ！」爽快なギターイントロと共に「Feel a whole lot better」が始まった。初期のThe Byrdsが憑依したようなタイトなプレイとフロント3人のラフなハーモニーは涙もの。
 
躍動するシャッフルビートが身体を揺らす「Married woman」の後、彼らはNRBQの「I want you bad」を披露。そしてCyrilがYardbirdsの「White summer」のイントロを鳴らし、曲はそのまま「I can’t hide」へ突入。並み居るオーディエンスは歓喜の表情を浮かべながら身体を激しく揺らして踊っている。
 
亡くなったCyrilの友人に捧げられた「Between the lines」、しなやかにうねるCyrilのギターがバンドのグルーヴを煽る「Yes I am」。そして「昔、Chrisがバンドに加入した時に初めてやった曲」と紹介された「Let me rock」。甘酸っぱいメロディと性急なビートが交差するこのナンバーが熱く燃え上がる。観客のヴォルテージも沸点に達していく。
 
At around 7:00 p.m., time has coming at last. Here comes Flamin’ Groovies. Great shout of joy to arise from audience. The memorable reunion gig at their home town. I’m going to witness it close. “Good evening good children. We are Flamin’ Groovies from San Francisco, hello thank you jump up!” Cyril strums the opening chords of “Yeah my baby”, and gig is starts. Chris sings howling with playing a telecaster. Thunder lightning bass of George and drumming filled with dynamism of Victor made shook floor. It is a beginning of the enthusiasm. Great tunes that “Please please girl”, “You tore me down” were played in sequence with Byrdsy guitar playing. And Cyril saying ”Do you still love in Rock’n roll?” Then, “Tallahassee Lassie” of Freddy Canon explodes intensely. The big wave of the beat going for a driving surges freely and it made shakes the audience. “Still love in Gene Clark? OK, we’ll play a The Byrds tune!” “Feel a whole lot better” ! Their superb play and the rough harmony of front three is very Byrdsy! It was made me cry. After “Married woman” that the energetic shuffle beat shakes our body, they show us a number called “I want you bad” of NRBQ. And Cyril strummed introduction of Yardbirds “White summer”, it just breaks into “I can ‘t hide”. All audience smiling and shake a body intensely.
 
“Between the lines” were dedicated to a friend of Cyril who passed away, and “Yes I am” where a guitar of Cyril undulating flexibly drives the groove of the band. Then, “Let me rock” which was introduced “This is we played for the first time when Chris joined the band.” Bittersweet melody intersects a hasty beat flares up so hot after time of 40 years. The heat of the audience reaches the boiling point, too.
 
  

 

いつしかライヴは後半戦へ突入。不穏なギターリフと共に始まったのは「Teenage head」！悪名高き伝説的なレコード・プロデューサー、Kim Fowleyのことを歌ったこのナンバーは、Mick Jaggerもお気に入りの大名曲。暴走する機関車のようなリズムの奔流に乗って、観客の頭が一斉に揺れ始める。そして「Slow death」。アマチュア時代のSex Pistolsがリハーサルで好んで演奏していたというこの曲でのCyrilが奏でるキラー・リフはやはり圧巻！バンドが一体となった白熱のインタープレイが場内をますますヒートアップさせていく。
 
そしてついにこの時が来てしまった。聖地、サンフランシスコでどうしても生で聴きたかったあの曲が始まる時が。「この曲を今日、ここにいるみんなに捧げるよ…行くぜ、『Shake some action』!」
 
雷鳴のようなイントロが鳴り響いた瞬間、僕は我を忘れた。この名曲なしにFlamin’ Grooviesは語れない。躍動するビート、ビタースイートなメロディ、そして世界中の迷えるロックフリークの魂を救ったポジティヴなメッセージが一体となって僕らの胸を撃ち抜いた。そう、必要なのは、ほんの少しのアクション。いつだってどこだってそうなんだ。それなしでは何も始まらない。
 
And show is breaks into the second half gradually. What began with a threatening guitar riff “Teenage head!” This tune was given to notorious legendary record producer Kim Fowley and a favorite song of Mick Jagger. Ride on the rhythm such as a locomotive driving recklessly, the head of the audience begins to shake all at once. And “Slow death”, After all the killer riff by Cyril in this song that Sex Pistols played willingly at the rehearsal. That is one of the highlights of the show.
 
And this time has come at last. Certain tune begins that I wanted to listen to by all means in holy place San Francisco. Cyril said ”We dedicate the next song to all the people who appeared right now. Shake some action, let’s go!” I lost my self at the moment when the intro like a rolling thunder resounded. I can’t talk about Flamin’ Groovies without this great tune. A bittersweet melody and an energetic beat, and the positive message which saved the rolling rock’n roll people. It penetrated our soul. So, we need shake some action, anytime anywhere. Nothing begins without it.
 
  

 

気が付くと場内はアンコールを求める観客の声に包まれている。ライヴの楽しみ方を熟知しているサンフランシスコの素晴らしいオーディエンスが叫ぶ。そして再びステージに現れる4人の男たち。アンコール1曲目は『Jumpin’ in the night』からの珠玉のバラード「First plane home」。そしてCyrilのChuck Berryの申し子の如きギタープレイを合図に始まったのは「Roll over Beethoven」!　不滅のロックンロール・スタンダードが圧倒的な勢いでプレイされていく。
 
ロックンロール放蕩児たちの華麗なる帰還。世界中のファンが彼らの再会を待ち望んでいた。何故ならTHE BEATLES、THE ROLLING STONES、The Kinks、THE WHO、The Byrds等から受けた衝撃を生のまま抱えて転がり続けて来た生粋のロックンロールバンドは彼らしかいないから。巻き起こる大歓声と共にFlamin’ Grooviesの記念すべき母国凱旋ライヴは華々しくその幕を閉じた。
 
When I come to myself, the hall was surrounded by the voice of the audience for the encore. Wonderful audience of San Francisco who knowing a way of enjoying show well cries. And four men are back in the stage again. The encore first song is a ballad “First plane home” of the gem from Jumpin’ in the night. And what began for a signal by the guitar play like the child of Chuck Berry of Cyril “Roll over Beethoven!” An immortal rock’n roll standard is played by overwhelming force. The splendid return of rock’n roll ravers. Fans of the world looked forward to their reunion. Because only they are in the proper rock’n roll band which has essence of The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, The Byrds… And triumphant return gig of Flamin’ Groovies was finished with grand applause by audience.
 
Cyril appeared again in the face of me who stood still.”Thank you for coming. I wish a safe trip of you” So he said with gentle hug. Such Cyril goes down the stairs with his guitar. So I cried for his back. “Rock’n roll forever!” and I heard his voice from the landing. “Oh Yeah!” I think that maybe I’m a dreaming. Across the passage of time, I want to say to me in the days of the junior high student who was the beginner of rock fan. “Can you believe it? You’ll be hugged by Cyril Jordan in San Francisco!” I looked up at the sky and muttered in this way “Thanks Flamin’ Groovies, Thank you, David, Victor, Eric, Heidi! And great city San Francisco that welcomed me warmly, thank you very much!
 
  

 

   

   

   

   

 
たった7日間の滞在だったが、僕はこの街に恋してしまった。サンフランシスコ。60年代ロックの聖地を巡る旅。僕は巡礼だった。駆け足で辿ってみよう。何度も訪れた、ヒッピーの聖地、ヘイトアシュベリーとゴールデン・ゲートパーク。ビートニクの偉人たち、ジャック・ケルアック、アレン・ギンズバーグ等が屯していたノースビーチ。印象的な町並みのカストロ。Flamin’ GrooviesのVictorとそぞろ歩いたエキゾックなミッション地区、ヴァレンシア・ストリート。夜のブロードウエイのぞくぞくするあの雰囲気。毎晩通いつめたノースビーチのブルース・バー『Saloon』。この街で僕は様々な素晴らしい人たちと出会った。きっとこの街は1967年のサマー・オヴ・ラヴから何も変わっていないのだろう。かつてThe AnimalsのEric Burdonが「サンフランシスコの夜」で「生まれたのはここじゃないけれど、俺はここで死ぬだろう。こんな街は他所にはない」と歌っていた。そんな彼の気持ちが心に染みる旅だった。
 
It was just one week stay, but I fell in love with San Francisco. The trip around the holy place of the 60s rock. I was a pilgrim. I will trace it in some words. The sacred place for hippies I went many times, Haight Ashbury and Golden gate park. North Beach where greats of the beatnik, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg hung around. Castro has beautiful cityscape. The exotic Mission district, Valencia street that I strolled with Victor of Flamin’ Groovies. Fascinating airs of night Broadway. Blues bar “Saloon” of North Beach that I went every night. I met various beautiful people in this city. It seems that the spirit of this town is nothing changed since summer of love in 1967.As Eric Burdon song “I wasn’t born there, perhaps I’ll die there, There’s no place left to go, San Francisco” It was the trip that his feeling touched my heart deeply.
